Herbal Hope for Allergies?

What can you tell me about an herb called pe min gan wan? I've been told that it can help with my allergies.
Pe min gan wan is a traditional Chinese herbal formula, not a single herb, used to treat allergies. It combines magnolia flower, Chinese lovage root, angelica root, licorice root, and others. I have no first-hand experience with it, but Randy Horwitz, M.D., an allergist and medical director of the Program in Integrative Medicine, tells me that several of his patients with allergic rhinitis (hay fever) have used pe min gan wan prescribed by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and have reported that it was very helpful. There is no reason why you shouldn't try it. Read more...

Fish and omega 3s: sometimes more is more

Fish and omega 3s: sometimes more is more

By now most of us are aware of the benefit of including omega-3 fatty acid-rich fish in our diets once or twice per week to help protect against cardiovascular and other disease. Now the findings of a study published in the January 17, 2006 issue of Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, show that consuming more fish and, consequently, more omega-3s, leads to an even greater reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease.

Researchers in Japan followed 41,578 men and women aged 40 to 59 who did not have cardiovascular disease or cancer upon enrollment, from 1990-1992 to 2001. Food frequency questionnaires completed at the beginning of the study and in 1995 provided information on weekly fish intake, which was analyzed for omega-3 content. Read more...

Green tea nutrients prevent and treat brain disorders

(NaturalNews) The December issue of Nature Chemical Biology contains a study that reveals the powerful effect of the green tea component EGCG in preventing and treating serious brain disorders like Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's diseases. When combined with another isolated component, the elements therapeutically eliminate the protein amyloids which are thought to cause these brain diseases.

Amyloid plaques are tightly-bound protein sheets that make their way into the brain and occupy nerve cells. Sometimes they literally bind themselves around the brain tissue. Consequently, brain cells lose their oxygen source and begin to die, leading to memory and speech loss, diminished motor skills, and eventually death. Read more...

Smoking Exposure Now Linked to Colon, Breast Cancers

(HealthDay News) -- Add colorectal cancer to the list of malignancies caused by smoking, with a new study strengthening the link between the two.

And other studies are providing more bad news for people who haven't managed to quit: Two papers published in the December issue of Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a themed issue on tobacco, strengthen the case for the dangers of secondhand smoke for people exposed to fumes as children and as adults.

Inhaling those secondhand fumes may raise a woman's odds for breast cancer or a child's lifetime risk for lung malignancies, the studies found.

All of the findings, while grim, could be useful in the war against smoking, experts say.

"With the FDA [U.S. Food and Drug Administration], we're hoping this will be a significant tool to controlling tobacco, although it could get bogged down in so many different ways," said Dr. Peter Shields, deputy director of the Georgetown University Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Read more...
