Turmeric helps in breast cancer cure
AdrienneTurmeric, the medicinal properties of which Ayurveda found millennia ago, is now recognized by modern scientific research as a cure for breast cancer. Its anti toxic properties were also widely known, from ancient times in India. Turmeric is an ingredient in many Ayurvedic medicines.
Houston : Oct 15, 2005. : In what may spell good news for people at advanced stages of breast cancer, researchers have discovered that curcumin - the main ingredient in the common Indian spice turmeric - is an `effective preventive`. Researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre have found that curcumin, which gives Indian curry its yellow colour; inhibits metastasis in the lungs of mice afflicted with breast cancer.`We know that it`s an effective preventive at low doses, the question is whether larger doses can be therapeutic for disease sufferers,` Dr Bharat Aggarwal, of the experimental therapeutics department at the cancer centre, said. Though study results are early, researchers found the non-toxic natural substance not only repelled progression of the disease to the lungs, but also appeared to reverse the effects of paclitaxel taxol, a commonly prescribed chemotherapy for breast cancer that may trigger spread of the disease with use over a long period of time.`We are excited about the results of the study and the possible implications for taking the findings into the clinic in the next several years,` he said.
Advanced breast cancer is currently a difficult foe to fight with few proven treatments available after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Because taxol is so toxic, it activates a protein that produces an inflammatory response that induces metastasis.
Curcumin suppresses this response, making it impossible for the cancer to spread. In fact, researchers found that adding curcumin to taxol actually enhances its effect.
Curcumin breaks down the dose, making the therapy less toxic and, just as powerful while delivering the same level of efficacy.Taxol is currently used as chemotherapeutic agent in breast cancers, but because the drug frequently induces resistance after prolonged use, it is not effective in treating metastatic breast cancer, says Aggarwal.
Researchers studied 60 mice with breast cancer, which were randomly assigned to one of four groups - control group, taxol only, curcumin only and the combination of taxol and curcumin. After the tumours grew to 10 mm in size, they were surgically removed, and the mice were fed powdered curcumin.

US take note of Ayurvedic remedy to lower cholesterol.
Jayaram RameshThe resin of the Guggulu tree has been used in Indian traditional medicines for more than 2,500 years, and more recently has been enlisted to fight high cholesterol. David Moore of the Baylor College of medicine in Houston found that the Guggulu extract lives up to its reputation. It really does lower cholesterol in a number of clinical studies in the Indian literature, Moore said.Writing in the journal science he said it has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine since at least 600BC to treat obesity and other disorder.Moore`s team found the steroid guggulsterone, the active agent in the Guggulu extract blocks the activity of the Foresaid X receptor (FXR) on cells. FXR helps regulate cholesterol by affecting levels of bile acids, which are produced from cholesterol and released by the liver.

Skin Care in Acne vulgaris
Dr SubramanyamIntroduction
Acne is a very common skin disorder that happens to almost every one of us at some point of time. This apparently trivial thing may lead to serious troubles later if left unattended. Recurring acne may suggest a major disorder in bodily mechanisms. Timely care through easy treatment help restricting the acne. This article presents analysis of the acne formation process and suggests some simple home remedies.
Physiology of SkinSkin is a physical barrier to the external environment. It is more than a layer separating us from the outside world. Skin is an important protective organ. The skin consists of mainly two structural layers – Epidermis (outer layer) and Dermis (inner layer). The sebaceous gland situated under Dermis layer is primarily responsible for producing sebum (oil). Sebum acts as lubricant for hair and skin and also serves to repel external substances such as water molecules, damaging chemicals and microorganisms.
Skin Care in Acne vulgaris - What is acne?
Dr SubramanyamAcne is an inflammatory disorder of the skin resulting from an overactive sebaceous gland. It is marked by the eruption of pimples or pustules especially on the face.
Process of acne informationAcne formation begins with excessive secretion of sebum that blocks the hair follicle, the passage that leads from the sebaceous gland to the surface of the skin. Normally sebum helps in removing the dead cells from the lining of the hair follicle and in carrying them to the outer skin surface. However, if the amount of sebum secreted from sebaceous gland increases, it blocks the hair follicle thus making it difficult for dead cells to reach the skin surface. As a result, the dead cells get trapped.
These dead cells combine with sebum and bacteria to form a plug in the follicle. When infection remains under the skin surface, it develops into white head. When the infection partly reaches the surface and changes color it develops into black head.
Skin Care in Acne vulgaris - Cause of Acne
Dr SubramanyamMany factors are responsible for producing acne.
These can be categorized as follows:
1. External Factors: These mainly include pollution, direct exposure to sun over longer duration etc.
2. Internal Factors: include heredity, hormonal imbalances, stress, constipation etc.
Remedies
Prevention is better than cure.
Acne, particularly the one, caused by internal factors as above can be easily prevented. The following habits can be helpful:1. Drink 8~10 glasses of water daily2. Eat plenty of fruits and leafy vegetables Wash your face 2~3 times a day, but not more than that. Too much washing will aggravate the situation as excessive washing causes the body to produce more oil which makes the acne worse3. To keep the acne under control, one needs to control both external as well as internal factors. External remedies, as mentioned below, along with internal nutritious diet lead to healthy skin.
Skin Care in Acne vulgaris - external remedies
The following external remedies [1] are useful:Dr Subramanyam

3. Apply Nutmeg (Indian: Jaiphal) powder with un-boiled milk on the affected area.
4. Rub fresh garlic on and around affected area.
5. Make a paste of neem leaves with turmeric powder. Apply this paste on the affected area.

9. Application of cucumber juice on the face.
10. Prepare a mixture of grated apple and lemon juice. Apply this mixture on your face.

What is Gray Hair (alopecia areata)
Prof Madiraju V SubramanyamHair typically turns gray as a result of aging. Pigment in the hair shaft comes from special cells at the root (base) of the hair. These cells are genetically programmed to make a certain amount of pigment (melanin) at specific ages. At some point in the aging process, these cells make less and less pigment until the hair has very little pigment. White hair has no pigment, and gray hair has some but not as much as a red, black or brown hair. Not all hairs respond in the same way or at the same time. So the graying process usually is gradual. You can`t prevent graying. Some people start graying in their 30s, and some not until their 60s. Genetics likely play a strong role in graying.
People rarely go gray overnight. If they do, it`s typically due to alopecia areata. This condition causes the thicker, darker hairs to stop growing before it affects the growth of gray hairs — giving the impression of graying overnight.
Alopecia areata eventually causes roundish patches of hair loss or complete loss of hair on the head or body. Its cause isn`t known. In red hair, nearly all the melanin is present in the form of phaeomelanin. Coloring red hair is difficult because of this different pigmentation, and bleaching red hair to a lighter shade is especially hard.Greying hairGray hair is one of the most familiar signs of aging. The age when greying starts depends on one`s genetic inheritance. But in half of all Caucasoid people, half the hairs on the scalp are grey by the age of 50.The loss of hair color is due to a gradual fall in melanin production in the hair bulb. If you look at the hairs on a greying head you find a full range of color, from the normal shade through to white along each hair, and also from one hair to another. Usually people notice their first gray hairs near their temples. Then the grayness spreads to the crown, and later to the back of the head.Rapid grayingYou have probably heard stories about people who are supposed to have `gone white overnight` following some terrible shock or grief. Treat these tales with caution!
A black hair cannot of itself suddenly turn white. Hairs grow for years with pigment inside them, and since they are `dead` there is no process by which the melanin throughout a hair can be naturally destroyed rapidly (although it may be bleached by sunlight over many years).Apparent rapid greying may be due to a selective shedding of pigmented hair in a person who has some gray hairs which are retained. Shedding of this kind usually takes several months, but can happen within a few days. If it does take place quickly the effects can be dramatic, since the person`s grey hairs may not have been at all obvious until the darker hairs were lost.Whether stress or shock can cause this kind of hair loss (known as alopecia areata) is unknown.
Treatment of Alopecia Areata
Prof Madiraju V SubramanyamUnfortunately there is not yet any reliable cure for alopecia areata. Luckily the hair usually grows back slowly by itself. Sometimes the new hair may regrow grey or white, but after a while the original colour usually returns. Injecting a cortisone medicine into the area of hair loss may speed up the natural regrowth of hair. This treatment is known as an ‘intralesional steroid injection’. The regrowth occurs only in the area that has been injected. There is no way of preventing new areas of hair loss.
However if they appear, regrowth can be helped by further injections. Many other treatments have been introduced for alopecia areata, but the results are variable - no one has yet devised anything that works for everyone. Some lotions applied to the scalp do seem to result in temporary improvement in some people, but the hair falls out again as soon as they are stopped. Medicines which are often tried include topical steroids and minoxidil, and irritants such as dithranol. The most successful treatment to date has been immunotherapy. Immunotherapy works by provoking a contact allergic dermatitis in affected areas by applying a low concentration of a material to which the patient has been made allergic.
This is most often diphenylcyclopropenone (diphencyprone). Unfortunately the resultant dermatitis is irritating and may be unsightly, often accompanied by a swollen lymph gland. Therapists and others in contact with the diphencyprone can also develop dermatitis. For extensive hair loss, there is no reliable treatment. Steroid pills, or a special form of ultraviolet light treatment (PUVA), are sometimes worthwhile, but may result in side effects. An attractive wig is often the best solution. Some people need professional counselling to come to terms with the disorder, regain self-confidence and live full, productive lives.

Herbs for Hypertension?
Provided by: DrWeil.com
Q: I just read about a new herbal medicine for blood pressure called Mukta Vati. What do you think about it? I am currently having trouble taking a prescription drug for blood pressure. It is really helping my (blood) pressure, but it is causing insomnia. I am having dreams every night, and even if I do get a nap it is not a solid sleep. -- Nick G. A: Mukta Vati is an Ayurvedic herb used to treat high blood pressure. Although I've seen testimonials from people who say it really has helped lower their blood pressure, I haven't seen any scientific studies confirming its effects.
If your blood pressure is high enough to warrant medication, I would suggest discussing the drug-related problems you've been having with your physician. He or she may recommend another medication or adjust the dosage of the one you're taking in an effort to eliminate the side effects you've experienced. At the same time, consider making lifestyle changes that can help control your blood pressure.
Here are some suggestions:
Limit your caffeine intake (caffeine can contribute to high blood pressure).
Limit alcohol intake (Blood pressure increases as your body metabolizes alcohol.)
Avoid processed foods and other sources of salt. Your salt intake should be no more than one teaspoon (2,400 mg) per day.
Watch your weight. (Losing even a few pounds can improve blood pressure.)
Relax. (Meditation, yoga, breathing exercises and biofeedback all can help lower blood pressure.)
Don't smoke.
Exercise. (As little as 30 minutes per day of walking can lower blood pressure.)
Make sure that no medication you're taking is contributing to high blood pressure. (Steroids, birth control pills, decongestants, NSAIDS and diet pills can raise blood pressure. So can over-the-counter medications containing licorice root, guaraná, kola nut, yerba maté, ginseng and yohimbe.)
Take calcium and magnesium. (Low intake of both are associated with high blood pressure; women need between 1,000 and 1,500 mg of calcium per day; men no more than 1,200 mg daily from all sources. If you get your calcium from supplements, take half as much magnesium as your calcium dosage.)
Take vitamin C, which has been shown to lower blood pressure in people with mild to moderate hypertension.
In addition, make sure that your daily diet includes eight to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables, two to three servings of low or non-fat dairy foods, and garlic (it can help lower blood pressure). Include four to five servings of nuts, seeds and dry beans per week and plenty of fish such as wild Alaskan salmon and sardines for the heart-protective omega-3 fatty acids they provide.

Prevent the Menopause Blues
Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf, M.D., is currently the Medical Director of the Maharishi Vedic Medical Center at The Raj in Fairfield, Iowa. The author of A Woman’s Best Medicine: Health, Happiness and Long Life through Maharishi Ayurveda (Tarcher/Putnam), she has lectured extensively on Maharishi Ayurveda and appeared on The Donahue Show, Geraldo, and CNN. Total Health News recently asked her to talk about better health during menopause.
Q: Why is menopause such a difficult passage?
A: I would say that even though menopause is often a difficult passage in America today, there are many other cultures in which menopause isn’t such a problem. In Japan, for instance, there’s not even a term for “hot flash.” This absence of hot flashes is commonly attributed to the fact that the diet of most Japanese women consists of foods which contain natural phytoestrogens (plant-based estrogens). Ayurvedic experts who have come to America have expressed amazement that there are so many more American women with menopausal, menstrual, and reproductive problems than in India.
Q: Is there a reason for this discrepancy?
A: Of course, the diet is probably an important factor. Also, possibly part of it is genetic. However, if a woman’s lifestyle, diet, and sleep habits are out of balance, it creates imbalances in the doshas -- which in turn creates problems with menopause. For example, any change tends to aggravate Vata. So if a woman is already experiencing a Vata imbalance, the major hormonal and internal changes of menopause can take Vata further out of balance. And Vata can lead Pitta out of balance -- and that can cause hot flashes, emotional ups and downs and other problems.
Q: So how can American women avoid those kinds of imbalances?
A: The main thing is to really slow down. Go to bed before 10:00 because after ten, Pitta dosha increases, and that creates more heat in the body. If you begin your night’s sleep in the cooler, Kapha time, then the body will be more settled. If hot flashes at night are a problem, it’s better not to eat a lot of heavy or spicy food at night. Before bed, you could drink warm cow’s milk or warm soy milk. Maharishi Ayurveda recommends boiling both types of milk first to make it more digestible. You can add a little rose water or Rose Petal Preserve for a cooling, Pitta-pacifying snack. It’s also important not to to work on the computer or watch violent, frightening, or emotionally intense movies before bed, as these charge up Vata and Pitta dosha.
Q: And for the daytime?
A: Get some exercise. Also, practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique twice a day helps release stress and balance the mind, body and emotions. Eat meals on time. Favor zucchini, squashes and watery vegetables, as they have a natural cooling effect. You can start the day with stewed apple to balance all three doshas [see recipe]. You might eat more phytoestrogens, such as tofu. Sauté the tofu with spices -- such as turmeric, cumin, and coriander -- to make it more digestible. You can also drink Golden Transition Tea, which provides nutritional support, balances and supports hormonal flow, and boosts resistance to stress -- both before and after menopause. Midlife for Women I helps women who are still menstruating to purify toxins, which are a complicating factor in menopause. Midlife for Women II is recommended when menstruation becomes irregular and especially in the case of hot flashes, because it’s more cooling.
Q: Is there anything women can do instead of taking HRT (hormone replacement therapy) with all its risks, if these natural self-treatments aren’t enough?
A: Fortunately there is. A minority of women have very resistant hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms that don’t respond to the recommended diet, herbal and lifestyle changes. Usually this is due to “ama,” or wastes and impurities blocking the tiny circulatory channels in their bodies, making it especially difficult to balance their doshas. These women often find Maharishi Rejuvenation Therapy (MRT), or "panchakarma," to be very effective in reducing their symptoms. Just today, a 60-year-old lawyer, back for her second MRT treatment, raved to me about how symptoms she had suffered from since menopause 6 years before disappeared within 2 weeks of the treatment and never returned. She was very grateful.
